1. How Does it Work?

First take a look at the robot we’re about to construct — you’ll find some common elements found on many robots as well as some others.

Some of the major components that you’ll find in the robot are: (a) light emitting diodes (LED), (b) speaker, (c) thick gauge wire, (d) electronics, (e) battery pack, (f) MP3-player, (g) base, (h) wheel, and (i) motor.

The key to how all of this works is the music that is played by your MP3-player, which is specially encoded with your choreographed dance moves. You will program dance moves into your favourite song with a piece of software that is provided in this tutorial, which will be discussed in Part-6: Program.

There are generally two channels (i.e. left-channel and right-channel) for music (or MP3 files) that you play on your MP3-player. These channels send music to your left and right ear, respectively. With our program, we remove the music in the right-channel of your song and replace it with dance move commands.

Dance moves are specially encoded in your MP3 file. The left-channel contains just your regular music, while the right-channel is substituted with digital information, which has dance moves encoded in it.

When your MP3-player is plugged in and you play your encoded song, the left-channel goes directly to an audio amplifier and plays the music out loud, while the right-channel goes to a small computer, which interprets the digital information as motor and light commands.

The left-channel portion of the newly encoded MP3 file is just your regular music, which can be played out loud on a speaker. The right-channel portion contains dance moves, which is encoded digitally, and this is sent to a small computer that interprets this as motor and light commands.
